The historic Portuguese university city of Coimbra is to sign a twinning agreement with the Chinese city of Guangzhou early next year, an official said Thursday.
The chairman of Coimbra's municipal assembly, Manuel Lopes Porto, described the accord with Guangzhou, capital of China's powerhouse province of Guangdong, as "extremely important", adding that it would be formalized in February, 2007.
Coimbra's mayor, Carlos Encarnação, told Lusa that his city is also establishing a twinning agreement with the Pakistani city of Lahore, but gave no timeframe for the signing of this accord.
